Ireland’s challenge at Henley Royal Regatta came to an end today. Cork Boat Club’s excellent run in the Wyfold for men’s club coxless fours ended with a defeat to London Rowing Club, while UCD lost to University of Washington in the Prince Albert for student coxed fours.
London accelerated sweetly off the start in the heat of the Wyfold. They used the good tailwind conditions to build a lead against Cork, who initially were able to limit it to under a length – but not for long enough. London pushed away, and an effort to rein them in near the finish by Cork did not prove effective. The verdict was a London win by two and a quarter lengths.
University of Washington were also conscious of the advantage of a good start in the Prince Albert heat. UCD got away well enough, but soon found themselves more than a length behind. From there the classy American crew were not going to beaten.
